Prospective Students

Our current research emphasis is directed toward the value of wetlands to fish and wildlife, and the potential impact of man-caused alterations on aquatic and/or terrestrial ecosystems. Our students generally are enrolled in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation or School of Forestry Resources and Conservation. Additional options for enrollment exist in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, Environmental Engineering Sciences and Environmental Horticulture.

Students may also be interested in opportunities through the USGS-Southeast Ecological Science Center, the USDA's APHIS Field Station, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife's Research Institute. The University of Florida houses the Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, the Center for Wetlands, the Archie Carr Sea Turtle Center, and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Research assistantships are available through FCFWRU for well-qualified students. Graduate research assistants are expected to carry out certain duties in addition to their thesis research. These are a part of the requirements for earning a graduate degree and serve as an important component of the student's education and the Cooperative Unit's overall research program. Masters candidates are expected to have a substantial background, including a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and/or resource management. Deficiencies in background must be made up in addition to regular degree requirements. Non-resident status students may be eligible for a limited number of fee waivers; they may also apply for Florida resident status after one year. More information can be found at the UF International Center.
