Objective:
Gain intensive field exposure to unique Coastal Plain ecosystems. Focus on natural history, challenges of conservation management and restoration of longleaf pine savanna ecosystem, associated isolated wetlands, and riparian forests.
Field experiences include:
- Wetlands: the role of fire in shaping wetland vegetation; amphibian diversity
- Swamps: black water stream ecology and swamp-upland restoration
- Pitcher plant bogs: ecology, conservation, and restoration
- Rare species management: Red-cockaded woodpecker, keystone species
- Prescribed fire: importance as management tool
- Longleaf pine forests: natural history; biodiversity, old growth forests
- Riparian forests: species diversity and vegetation classification
- Blue-hole springs: karst geology; Floridan aquifer
