Professional Experience

Associate Professor, Wildlife Ecology & Conservation Department, IFAS, University of Florida, Gainesville FL, Sept. 2000 – present.  Extension Wildlife Specialist: responsibilities are 80% extension and 20% research FTE.  In conjunction with faculty, county extension agents, and state agencies, responsibilities include developing, researching, and implementing educational programs about wildlife issues and natural resource conservation of public interest; research on urban biodiversity and sustainable development; and conducting public workshops and continuing education programs with policymakers, design/build professionals, and the public.  Current research and outreach involves how biodiversity is affected by urban landscape design/management and ways to create resources efficient communities.

Director, Wahsega 4-H Environmental Education Center, Cooperative Extension Service, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Georgia, Dahlonega, GA, June 1999 – Aug 2000.  Responsibilities included overall operation of the Center with a budget of over $500,000 per year; supervising and hiring of permanent and seasonal staff; development and implementation of environmental education courses; teaching classes; training environmental education instructors; and administering education programs.

Post-doctoral Assistant, Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Project (CAP-LTER), Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, February 1998 - June 1999.  Worked on an interdisciplinary, urban research project funded by the National Science Foundation.  Duties were outreach and research. 

Lecturer - University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, 1996-1997 Designed and taught a course on Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior for non-biology majors.   Classroom size was approximately 80 students.

Television and Radio Experience, October 1996 - present  Currently hosting and co-producing a PBS series title “Living Green” in conjunction with WUFT TV.   Along with That Gunk on Your Car (a book written by myself and published by Ten Speed Press, Oct. 1996) and my research on wildlife in urban areas, I have educated people about insects and urban wildlife through numerous TV and radio programs.  Advised, appeared in, and helped design many of the segments featured in the following programs:  TV - ABC News with Peter Jennings; The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; BBC (England) Science Show; The Learning Channel’s Amazing Science; TV pilot show for PBS/WNET about backyard wildlife; @Discovery Canada; and Channel 3’s Brainstorm Series. Radio - NPR’s Weekend Edition; NPR’s Science Friday; Pulse of the Planet; Ripley’s Believe it or Not; etc. 

Peace Corps Volunteer- Senegal, West Africa 1987 - 1989.  Reforestation project in the Sahel. Duties included living in a village, learning the local language (Wolof) and culture, and working with community groups.
