UF has an Undergraduate Honors Program (for freshmen and sophomores) that leads to an Honors AA degree (4 UF honors courses are required for that before you become a junior).

See http://www.honors.ufl.edu/

Once you are in the upper division, you have three routes for graduating with some level of Honors if you are a WEC student in the College of Ag and Life Sciences.

1. If your GPA is at least 3.5, then when you graduate, UF automatically grants your degree as ‘cum Laude’ (Honors).  (You basically do nothing but keep your GPA at least that high).

See http://www.honors.ufl.edu/

2. Join the CALS Upper Division Honors program (if your GPA is 3.75 or higher).

-- Take courses (Honors courses at the upper division level)

-- Do an honors thesis to achieve graduation Magna cum Laude, or Summa cum Laude

See www.cals.ufl.edu/honors

3. Don’t join the CALS Honors Program (if your GPA is 3.75 or higher)

-- Do an honors thesis to achieve graduation Magna cum Laude, or Summa cum Laude

(no special courses needed).

Some Tips

·         Ask a lot of questions!  And ask them early if you are thinking honors.

·         A thesis will be added work, but there are many reasons to do one.

·         You must work with a faculty advisor on your thesis project.

·         You have to go looking for him/her and beat the bushes for the perfect project for you.

·         Your faculty/thesis advisor does not have to be in WEC (can be in another dept).

·         GET FUNDING for your thesis project from the University Scholars Program

o   See www.scholars.ufl.edu

o   The program’s journal for Undergraduate Research Reports http://www.clas.ufl.edu/jur/
