UF/Department Computer Polcies
Consulting Services - UF Help Desk
Clients who walk-in to HUB 132 with their laptop or handheld device can receive hands-on consulting if consultants are available. If consultants are not available, an appointment can be made. Consultants will work with you and your device for up to 30 minutes to configure a campus network connection or install and configure software that is distributed on the current version of the UF Software CD. The WEC department offers this same service, please see Tom Barnash in NZ 305.
Laptop and handheld session topics include:
- Configuring and troubleshooting campus dialup, DHNet, walkup, VPN and wireless network connections
- Configuring and troubleshooting email software for GatorLink, NERSP or Grove Unix email services
To obtain help configuring other campus email services, you must know your incoming and outgoing mail server names and the protocols supported. This information can be obtained from your Campus Subnet Manager.
- Settings and use of telnet, tn3270 or file transfer software
- Installation and setup of virus scan and anti-spyware software
Free walk-in laptop/handheld consulting sessions are normally limited to one session per client per week.
The following services are NOT offered by UF or our department. You will want to contact your vendor or a local service center for this type of work.
- Hardware maintenance and repair
- Consultation on class assignment tasks
- Walk-in installations or configurations on desktop computers
Note that the Help Desk/IT Staff reserves the right to end any consulting session due to hardware issues, software incompatibility or corruption or other circumstances that require vendor assistance.
Personal Computers
The UF/WEC department will not service personal computers. You will need to contact your computer vendor or local service department, such as the Geek Squad.
