WGSA Travel Awards

To encourage graduate students to participate in their professional and academic arenas, each year the Department of Wildlife Ecology & Conservation makes funds available for graduate students to attend conferences/symposiums for presenting research. These funds are administered by the Wildlife Graduate Student Association (WGSA). Further matching funds are also provided by the Institute For Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).

There are 20 travel awards of (at least) $150 each available annually from WEC (Plus $150 IFAS matching funds).

There are 4 deadlines for submitting travel award applications:

Application Deadlines: For Travel Between: # of Awards Available
February 15 April 1 - June 30 6 awards
May 15 July 1 - September 30 6 awards
August 30 October 1 - December 31 3 awards
November 15 January 1 - March 31 5 awards

For complete instructions on how to apply and an applicaton, click here (requires Adobe Acrobat)

To be eligible you must:

1. Be a registered graduate student in Wildlife Ecology & Conservation.
2. Be presenting a paper or poster display at a conference, symposium, workshop or meeting.
3. Not have received a WEC Graduate Student Travel Award in the past 12 months.
4.  In addition to the WEC Graduate Student Travel Grant, applicant must also apply for the following travel awards:
  a. IFAS Graduate Student Travel Grant (matches WEC Award up to $200 maximum)
  b. Graduate Student Council Travel Award
Note, some of these awards will need to know that you have been granted a WGSA award before you can apply for their travel award. Thus, your WGSA application will be incomplete. You will need to show us proof once you receive notice of award from these other organizations. At this point your application becomes "official" and successful. Contact the WGSA Treasurer for any further questions about this confusing situation.

WEC travel award amounts and dispursement protocol:

  1. Awards are normally $150 from WEC plus $150 matching funds from IFAS.
  2. This amount may be increased if there are fewer applicants than available awards at a particular deadline.
  3. If there are fewer applicants than available awards for that deadline, the remaining funds will be evenly split among eligible applicants to a maximum total award of $200 each from WEC plus $200 matching from IFAS.
  4. If money still remains, additional awardees can be funded for that award period. These additional awards however, may be smaller than for the other award recipients (e.g. If 6 awards are available for the period but $100 remains, a 7th person can receive an award of $100).
  5. Travel money not allocated at a particular deadline will be rolled over to the next deadline. This will therefor increase the available number of awards at that deadline. These additional awards however, may be smaller than for the other award recipients (e.g. If 6 awards are available for the period and $100 is rolled over from the previous period, a 7th person can receive an award of $100).
  6. On the February 15 award deadline (this is the last deadline in the UF fiscal year), all rolled-over money in addition to money allocated for that particular deadline will be divided equally among all recipients of awards (for that deadline) with no upper limit (however, IFAS will only match $200 of this award).
